Marine Engineering is the branch of engineering which deals with the vehicles and structures that use ocean for transport, recreation and harnessing marine resources. The ocean is the most challenging environment in the world. There are so many factors that must be considered when designing a vehicle to operate in such a harsh environment. Extreme pressures, watertight integrity, corrosion, surface and underwater currents, hydrodynamics and navigation are just a few of the many difficulties confronting an engineering team. The fundamental knowledge and skills acquired by Marine Engineering graduates in fluid and structure interaction mean that they are among the most internationally sought-after engineers. Their diversified role, both inside and outside the maritime sector, is reflected in the best employability prospects of all engineering sciences disciplines.

Salient Features |
|
It is a four years full-time programme leading to Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.), providing a broad coverage of fundamental engineering subjects within the context of Marine Engineering. The teaching is structured on a semester pattern.
The course is carefully designed in such a way that the major thrust of the programme is in design, manufacturing and management related to marine engineering which is unique. In the first year you will be exposed to basic engineering subjects. In the second year, besides the basic engineering subjects, you will be exposed to subjects related to marine engineering. In third and fourth year you will be exposed to subjects related to marine engineering. Also you will be able to choose subjects as elective so as to give a thrust of your career as a designer, constructor and researcher. Final year project will form an integral part of your study, with opportunities to become involved in leading-edge research.

Career Opportunities |
There is, at present, tremendous growth in Indian Shipbuilding and offshore industry. Also, India has been found to be a profitable outsourcing hub for many external design/ consultancy organisations. Adequate numbers of qualified Marine Engineers are not available to take up this challenge. The present programme aims at quickly producing maritime design and construction engineers to fill this need on an immediate basis. |
